BALTIMORE, Md. - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) women's softball team split the first day of their series at Coppin State University (CSU) Saturday afternoon. After UMES won the first game 8-0 in five innings, the Lady Eagles rallied in the bottom of the seventh to take the nightcap 2-1, their first win over the Lady Hawks since 2006.
Hannah Mills (Parksley, Va.) led UMES' attack in the opener going 2-for-3 with a double, triple and two RBI. Fellow freshman Inde Whitehurst (Virginia Beach, Va.) earned the win for the Lady Hawks. She pitched five innings allowing just two hits and striking out six to improve to 8-5 on the season.
UMES (17-13, 4-4) jumped out early 3-0 at the end of the second inning. The score held until the fourth inning when the Lady Hawks opened it up. Whitehurst hit a single to center field and advanced to second on single by Cassandra Carlos (Norwalk, Calif.). Both advanced a base when CSU pitcher Paige Arnold threw the ball past the catcher. They would score on Mills' triple to center field. Chelsea Logan (Trenton, N.J.) followed behind Mills with a double to left center to score Mills.
Kendra Saunders (Mississauga, Canada) continued the hit streak with a triple to left center, scoring Logan, and scored herself on a throwing error by the shortstop. UMES ended the inning with five runs on five hits to go ahead 8-0. They held CSU scoreless through their next two at bats to take the win in five innings.
Arnold received the loss and started the second game for CSU. After Candice Wright hit a two out single to left center and stole second base, Charma Robinson reached on an error by the second baseman and Wright slipped around to score the first run of the second game.
No one would come around again to score until the final inning when UMES tied the game on a Kristi Miranda (Houston, Texas) RBI double to left center. CSU scored the game winning run on a single by Stephanie Watts to improve to 5-22 (2-8 MEAC).
Mills received the loss and Arnold grabbed her fifth win of the season.
The Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference rivals complete the series at 11 a.m. tomorrow morning in Baltimore, Md.
