DOVER, Del. - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) softball team is making a statement in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) this year. The Lady Hawks split with defending MEAC champions Delaware State University (DSU) for the second time this season after taking the first game 10-1 in six innings.
Inde Whitehurst (Virginia Beach, Va.) allowed one run on seven hits in six innings to earn the opening win. She improves to 6-4 on the season.
The Lady Hawks led the length of the contest. DSU's Brittney Ruark was replaced on the mound by Megan Lambertz after just a third of an inning, having given up UMES' first run of the game.
Two more runs came in the top of the second inning on a Hannah Mills (Parksley, Va.) single through the left side. Mills then stole second and scored on a fielding error by Leslie Pleasanton. The Lady Hornets grabbed their lone run on a single by Andrea Waters in the bottom of the fourth inning.
Despite having left early in the game, Ruark received the loss.
Chelsea Logan (Trenton, N.J.) hit a two out double in the first inning of game two before Ruark walked the bases loaded for Ebony Hahn (Groveport, Ohio). The 5-8 freshman sent everyone home on a standup double to put UMES up 3-0. Ruark struck out the next batter to end the side.
Mills started on the mound in the finale but was relieved after just a third of an inning having giving up six runs on five DSU hits.
While both teams combined for nine runs in the first inning, every Lady Hornet got a hit in the second game on their way to an 11-3 win over UMES.
DSU held the Lady Hawks scoreless for the remainder of the game to improve to 13-13. Mills, who received the loss, went 2-for-6 on the day with three RBI.
Hahn led the Lady Hawks at the plate going 3-for-6 with a double, three runs and three RBI.
UMES heads to Baltimore, Md. next to face MEAC rival Morgan State. The series will be April 11-12 with the double-header on Saturday starting 1 p.m.
