ORMOND BEACH, Fla. - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) softball team could not find their feet against Florida A&M University (FAMU) in the first round of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) tournament Thursday morning. The Lady Hawks fell to the undefeated southern division champions 10-2 in five innings for their first loss in the double elimination tournament.
FAMU took an early lead in the bottom of the first inning. Briana Weaver singled to right field with two outs and a runner on third.
Weaver advanced to second when the next batter was hit by a pitch and scored on Shayla Clarks single up the middle.
The Lady Rattlers would bat around the order and score two more runs before Mishayla Truttman (Gresham, Ore.) struck out the side.
The Lady Hawks held FAMU scoreless for the next inning, but the Lady Rattlers rallied in the third. After Truttman walked in a run, Inde Whitehurst (Virginia Beach, Calif.) took over on the mound. FAMU then cleared the bases on a wild pitch to go ahead 8-0.
Weaver hit an RBI single up the middle before the Lady Rattlers few out the inning. Reyes' no hitter ended in the fourth on back-to-back doubles by Hannah Mills (Parksley, Va.) and Kendra Saunders (Mississauga, Canada). Saunders scored Mills on her shot and came around herself on a single by Ebony Hahn (Groveport, Ohio), putting the Lady Hawks down 9-2.
FAMU put one more across in the bottom of the inning and held the Lady Hawks scoreless in the top of the fifth to end the contest.
UMES (20-17) moves into the loser's bracket and will face North Carolina A&T University at 4:30 p.m. today. This will be the first time they will see the Lady Aggies this season and need to win in order to stay alive in the tournament.
