PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - Senior Whitney Johnson (Prince Frederick, Md.) and junior Amon Kiprotich (Kapsabet, Kenya) have been named University of Maryland Eastern Shore Athletes of the Week for the period ending Sept. 13.
Johnson, an outside hitter of the women's volleyball team, helped the Hawks to a perfect 3-0 mark in the Delaware State Invitational over the weekend. UMES defeated Navy, La Salle and Norfolk State in straight sets to improve to 8-3 on the season.
Johnson was named to the all-tournament team averaging 3.22 kills per set with a .453 hitting percentage. She had 29 kills, four block solos and five digs.
UMES next travels to the Pitt Blue and Gold Tournament in Pittsburgh, Pa., Sept. 19-20 to face Valparaiso, Pittsburgh and Youngstown State.
Kiprotich, of the men's cross-country team, won the individual title at the Towson Invitational in Hunt Valley, Md. He ran a time of 28:14.86 in the five-mile race leading UMES to a second-place finish with 49 points.
