PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - Senior outside hitter Caylin Woodward (Garden Grove, Calif.) recorded 10 kills, 11 digs and seven assists as the University of Maryland Eastern Shore volleyball team swept Norfolk State, 3-0 (25-23, 25-20, 25-12) to close the Hampton Inn Salisbury North Invitational Saturday.
With the win, the Hawks (10-6) improved to 14-0 against the Spartans since 2002. Norfolk State fell t0 2-12.
Senior Whitney Johnson (Prince Frederick, Md.) tallied 12 kills and two digs and with a .409 hitting percentage redshirt junior Samantha Chukwura (Brooklyn, N.Y.) had eight kills. The Hawks outhit Norfolk State, .293-.179. Sophomore Christine Edwards (Lakewood, Calif.) registered seven kills, five digs and three aces. Freshman Bella Jade Romero (Arlington, Texas) had a match-high 34 assists.
The Hawks came from behind in the first game for the win. Down 12-6 at the first timeout, UMES took the lead, 20-19, when the Spartans' Tracy Copley had a hitting error. UMES won the game ob a Johnson kill assisted by Romero.
The second set was a close, back-and-forth affair. UMES' biggest lead was five at 24-19. Edwards again ended the game with a kill from Romero.
After surrendering the first point of the third game, the Hawks reeled off 12 of the next 17 to take command. The Hawks held NSU to six points the rest of the match in securing the win.
UMES won the blocking battle, 4.0-2.0.
Charlotte Armstead and Ellica Morris had eight kills apiece for the Spartans while Kristen Burt had five digs and Nicole Kessner added 25 assists for the visitors.
The Hawks play North Carolina Central Friday at 1 p.m.
