Jan. 4, 2010

Princess Anne, Md. - Both the men's and women's basketball teams were in action this week, with each team playing a pair of games on the road. The men continued their Midwest road swing with matchups at Ball State and Nebraska, while the Lady Hawks participated in the Georgia State Invitational.

Men's Basketball

Redshirt sophomore Hillary Haley (Oxon Hill, Md.) and junior Kevin White (Brooklyn, N.Y.) scored 13 and 11 points, respectively, as the University of Maryland Eastern Shore men's basketball team fell to Ball State, 65-47 in front of 2,903 at James E. Worthen Arena Monday night.

Haley, who was 5-for-12 from the floor and 3-for-9 from 3-point land, also had three rebounds, three steals and one assist. White continues to dish out assists on the season as he had six for the night in addition to four rebounds, one block and one steal. Sophomore Tyler Hines (Sicklerville, N.J.) led the Hawks in rebounds with nine. He added in four points and one blocked shot.

UMES was down by just four points at halftime, but second half efforts were not enough as the Nebraska Cornhuskers held on strong to defeat the Hawks, 74-60, in front of 8,482 at the Devaney Center Saturday afternoon. Haley once again led all scorers with 18 points in 30 minutes of play on 8-for-17 from the floor (1-for-6 from behind the arc). He added four rebounds, two assists and one steal. Redshirt junior Tim Burns (Franklinville, N.J.) chipped in 10 points of his own on 5-for-13 shooting and grabbed five rebounds, one assist and one steal in 39 minutes of play. Freshman Sean Berry (Irvington, N.J.) led both teams in rebounds with eight and White dished out seven assists.

Women's Basketball

Trailing by one point midway through the second half, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore Lady Hawks ended the game on a 24-11 run to cruise by the Mississippi Valley State Devilettes, 61-49, in the 16th Georgia State Invitational. Senior April McBride (New Rochelle, N.Y.) paced the Lady Hawks with 25 points, eclipsing the 1,300 points marker for her career at UMES (1,319). The Lady Hawks (2-4) advanced to play Georgia State, which beat UT Martin, 61-32, in the first game of the day, for the championship on Wednesday.

The Lady Hawks struggled on the offensive end and were upended by the Georgia State Panthers, 76-49, in the championship game of the 16th Georgia State Invitational. McBride scored a team-high 12 points and was selected to the GSU Invitational All-Tournament Team. During the two-game tournament, McBride scored 37 points and grabbed 18 rebounds for the Lady Hawks, who dropped to 2-5 with the loss. Georgia State improved to 9-2 with the win.

Upcoming Week (Jan. 4 - Jan. 11)

The UMES men's basketball team returns to the floor Monday night against the University of Oklahoma. The game marks the final game of their current five game road trip and will tip-off at 8 pm EST. The Lady Hawks look for non-conference toad wins at American Monday and North Carolina Central on Thursday. Both teams return to the Hytche Center Saturday for a women's-men's double-header against MEAC foe South Carolina State.
