PRINCESS ANNE, Md. -- Junior Zoe Bowens (Long Beach, Calif.) and freshman Maline Vaitai (Salt Lake City, Utah) of the Hawks volleyball team have been named University of Maryland Eastern Shore Athletes of the Week for the period ending Oct. 3.
Bowens, an outside hitter, was named tournament MVP of the Peaky's North/South UMES Invitational after getting 35 kills, nine digs and eight service aces in three contests. She registered double digit kills in each match and had a hitting percentage of 42.3% for the tournament.
Vaitai, also an outside hitter, was named to the All-Tournament Team after scoring 25 kills, five assists, 19 digs and three service aces in the two-day event. She was the only player for the Hawks to get a kill and an assist in all three matches.
Bowens and Vaitai helped lead the Hawks to victory in the UMES Invitational with three 3-0 wins. UMES (11-9) defeated North Carolina Central, North Carolina A&T and Norfolk State in the event.
UMES will begin conference play this week with a pair of games at home. The Hawks open MEAC action with a match against Morgan State on Friday at 7 p.m. followed with a bout against Delaware State on Sunday at 3 p.m.
