DOVER, Del. - After almost three weeks off, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore softball team was back in action Saturday as they fell, 16-0 to Howard, and 9-0 to Colgate, at the Delaware State Hornet Bash at the Hornets' Nest.
It looked as though the Lady Hawks would be able to put the first runs on the board in the first game as junior Chelsea Logan (Trenton, N.J.) walked and freshman Jasmine James (Willingboro, N.J.) doubled to left center in the first inning. Howard's Carly Martin then struck out junior Ebony Hahn (Groveport, Ohio) to strand the two runners.
Down 6-0 in the fourth, UMES was eager to score some runs. James walked before Hahn singled to reach base on the second hit of the day for the Lady Hawks. James then stole third base and Hahn advanced to second. Both runners were stranded when sophomore Britney McLeod (Palmyra, N.J.) struck out and sophomore Cy'Anna Scott (Paterson, N.J.) grounded out to second base.
The Lady Bison would then put UMES away as they gathered five runs in both the bottom of the fourth and fifth innings.
Martin earned the win for Howard while freshman Shanice Crowder (Baltimore, Md.) received the loss to move to 0-3 on the season. The Lady Hawks fall to 0-8 on the season while the Lady Bison improve to 9-11.
In their second game of the day, the UMES bats were silenced as Colgate pitchers Jesse McCarrick and Lacy Ver Steeg pitched a combined no-hitter with five strikeouts and no walks in five innings.
The Lady Hawks had just two base runners in the game as Logan reached on a fielding error by McCarrick in the first inning. Scott also reached base in the fifth inning, this time on a fielding error by first baseman Emmie Dolfi.
McCarrick earned the win for Colgate while Crowder received her fourth loss of the season. UMES moves to 0-9 and the Lady Raiders go to 15-5.
The Lady Hawks look for their first win of the season tomorrow as continue the tournament with matchups against North Carolina Central at 1 p.m. and Delaware State at 5 p.m.
