COPPIN STATE CLAIMS DOUBLEHEADER AGAINST UMES, 11-0, 4-0

March 28, 2010

Box Score

HANOVER, Md. - Tim Pomierski and Jim Vagnier each pitched complete-game shutouts to lead Coppin State to a doubleheader sweep of the UMES baseball team, 11-0 and 4-0, in the MEAC opener for both at Joe Cannon Stadium Sunday.

The sweep marked The Eagles' (7-11, 2-0 MEAC) first wins over the Hawks (1-20, 0-2) since CSU defeated UMES in a doubleheader, 4-1 and 8-4, on March 26, 2006 at Cannon Stadium.

Pomierski (3-2) went seven innings, gave up six hits and two walks while striking out five and Vagnier (2-1) also threw seven, scattering seven hits, walking two and fanned five.

Chris Kashangaki paced Coppin State at the plate on the day, going 4-for-6 with two runs and three RBIs, including a walk-off, two-run home run down the left-field line to end Game 1 in the bottom of the seventh.

Junior right fielder Bryan Chaikowsky (Bethlehem, Pa.) tallied a team-leading three singles in six at-bats in the two games for the Hawks.

After putting a run on the scoreboard in each of the first, second and fourth innings, CSU scored six in the fifth frame to take a nine-run advantage.

D.J. Robinson hit an RBI groundout to first that scored Craig Richmond with one out for the game's first run. Alexander Garza made it 2-0, scoring on a Dan Gleiberman grounder to short and Coppin extended to a three-run bulge when catcher Nick Wiggins (Littleton, Colo.) committed a throwing error that allowed Garza to score his second run of the game.

Garza walked, stole second and moved to third on a wild pitch from right-handed reliever Cameron Zimmerman (Harrisburg, Pa.), who entered for UMES starter Donnie Haines (Carneys Point, N.J.) with one out in the inning.

The Eagles sent nine men to the plate in the decisive fifth inning. Mark Reynoso and Harry Williams tallied RBI doubles with Reynoso's one-out shot picking up Johnson and Williams to make it 6-0.

Alex Black led off the seventh with a base hit and Kashangaki then bombed one to left to put the run rule in effect and give the Eagles their first conference victory in over three years.

Haines allowed two earned runs on three hits in 3.1 innings to take the loss. He dropped to 0-5 on the season.

UMES nearly scored in the second inning of Game 2 but Chaikowsky was cut down at the plate for the third out after catcher Derek Richards' throw dribbled down the first-base line.

Richards doubled to cap a string of three straight hits for a 1-0 CSU lead off sophomore lefty John DesChamps (Virginia Beach, Va.). Glieberman scored on Richards' double and Black singled later in the inning to plate Williams with two outs. Coppin added single runs in the fifth and sixth to ensure the win.

The Hawks threatened in the sixth and seven to break up the shutout, getting a pair of runners on in each inning only to come up with nothing to show for it.

In the seventh, sophomore Shaquille Bagwell (Atlantic, Ca.) and freshman Tony Gonzales New Braunfels, Texas) singled but junior J.J Corriveau (Hollywood, Fla.) lined into a double play at second to end the game.

DesChamps went the distance for the Hawks, absorbing the loss. He fell to 0-5, surrendering three earned runs and 10 hits in six innings. DesChamps struck out seven and issued just one walk.

The teams close the season Monday at 7 p.m.
