PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore softball team looked to bounce back after two disappointing losses Saturday and earn their first win of the season, but Coppin State and Paige Arnold had other ideas as they defeated the Lady Hawks, 8-0, in six innings Sunday afternoon.
Arnold pitched a complete game shutout, giving up just two hits and one walk while striking out five in the win. She also helped her cause at the plate as she went 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBIs.
It looked as though UMES would get on track in the first inning as sophomore Inde Whitehurst (Virginia Beach, Va.) led off with a walk and senior Ebony Hahn (Groveport, Ohio) singled off of Arnold.
This wouldn't be the case however, as the Lady Hawks sent the minimum amount of batters to the plate in the next three innings.
Freshman Shanice Crowder (Baltimore, Md.) received the second hit of the day for UMES, a single, in the fifth inning but was picked off after a strikeout by sophomore Britney McLeod (Palmyra, N.J.).
Crowder had another difficult afternoon on the mound, going 5.2 innings and giving up 13 hits, eight runs (all earned) and one walk while striking out one in the loss.
The Lady Eagles scored four runs in the third inning, one in the fifth and three in the sixth to go on for the win.
With the loss, the Lady Hawks fall to 0-7 on the season while Coppin State improves to 5-2. UMES continues to look for their first win of the season next weekend as they travel to Rock Hill, S.C. for games against UNC-Wilmington, Providence, Longwood and George Washington in the Winthrop Tournament.
