DOVER, Del. - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore softball team fell victim once again to inactive bats and they fell to Delaware State, 3-0 and 11-1, in a Saturday afternoon doubleheader at the Hornets Nest.

In the first game of the day, the Lady Hawks were only able to get two hits off of DSU pitcher Andrea Waters, who pitched a complete-game shutout.

Junior Ebony Hahn (Groveport, Ohio) led off the second inning with a double to centerfield and advanced to third on a groundout by junior Kyrus Whitehurst (Virginia Beach, Va.). Waters was able to get out of the inning by striking out sophomore Kristi Miranda (Houston, Texas).

UMES was held from getting a hit until the top of the seventh when junior Chelsea Logan (Trenton, N.J.) singled to right field. Two batters later, Hahn reached first on an error by first baseman Janelle Lukens.

The Lady Hawks were unable to score the two runners as the game ended with freshman Jasmine James (Willingboro, N.J.) hitting into a double play.

The Lady Hornets went through three pitchers in the second game, but the result was the same as UMES scrounged up four hits and only one run compared to DSU's 10 hits and 11 runs.

The Lady Hawks got their first hit of the game, again in the second inning, with a single by Whitehurst to left field. She advanced to second on a groundout by Miranda, moved on to third on a passed ball and eventually scored with a bunt single for sophomore Cy'Anna Scott (Paterson, N.J.).

UMES loaded the bases after a walk to freshman Shanice Crowder (Baltimore, Md.) and a fielder's choice to junior Inde Whitehurst (Virginia Beach, Va.). The Lady Hawks were unable to score any more runs as Logan struck out swinging and senior Ashley Johnson (Temple Hills, Md.) popped up to second base to strand the runners.

In the DSU half of the inning, they scored four runs on two hits and two errors to go up, 5-1.

UMES was able to get two more hits on the afternoon - a single in the fourth inning for Miranda and a single in the fifth for Hahn.

The Lady Hornets did more damage in the fourth inning with five runs on four hits and one error.

The Lady Hawks continue to look for their first conference win of the season as they fall to 1-19 overall and 0-4 in Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference play. DSU moves to 17-12 and 3-2.

The teams wrap up their weekend with a 2 p.m. matchup tomorrow at the Hornets Nest.
