DOVER, Del. - Pitcher Andrea Waters and left fielder Chelsea Stern led Delaware State University as they defeated the University of Maryland Eastern Shore, 9-1, Sunday at the Hornets' Nest to sweep the weekend series.
Waters finished the day going 2-for-3 from the plate with a double, run and RBI and pitched a solid 3.0 innings, striking out one and giving up one run on two hits. Stern was a perfect 2-for-2 on the day with a walk, run and RBI.
Sophomore Cy'Anna Scott (Paterson, N.J.) led the Lady Hawks as she went 1-for-2 in the game with a triple and the sole run scored. Senior Ashley Johnson (Temple Hills, Md.) had the other hit in the day for UMES as she also went 1-for-2.
As is a common theme for the season, the Lady Hawks gave up four runs in the first inning on two hits, three walks and four wild pitches by junior Inde Whitehurst (Virginia Beach, Va.).
UMES held the Lady Hornets scoreless in the second inning before scoring their own run in the top of the third.
The Lady Hornets received their only two hits of the day in the third. As the second batter of the inning, Scott tripled and then scored on an error by third baseman Sherelle Sheppard. Junior Chelsea Logan (Trenton, N.J.) reached base on another error by Sheppard before Johnson hit her single. The two runners were stranded with a pop-up to end the inning.
DSU responded with five runs of their own in the bottom of the inning off of four hits and one error.
UMES continues to look for their first conference win of the season as they fall to 1-20 overall and 0-5 in Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference play. DSU moves to 18-12 and 4-2.
The teams meet up once again for a doubleheader in Princess Anne on Wednesday with a 3 p.m. first pitch.
