BALTIMORE, Md. - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) men's and women's tennis teams fell in their final matches of the season this weekend, falling in a non-conference tilt to MEAC rival Coppin State. The men fell 4-2 to the Eagles while the women fell 5-2.
The men picked up wins at No. 4 and No. 5 singles as Osvaldo Rivera defeated Jahra Wigfull 6-1, 6-1 while Jon Toms topped Kelvin Edmonds 6-0, 6-0. Rivera team with Dorian Thomas at No. 2 doubles, falling 8-6 to James Jeffreys and Wigfull in a well played match.
The Hawks dropped No. 1 singles as Emmash Sudusinghe fell 6-1, 6-7 (7-0) to Viktor Lemberger. Thomas fell at No. 2 singles 6-0, 6-0 to Quincy Darko while MarQuet Robinson fell to James at No. 3 singles, 6-1, 6-0.
On the women's side UMES picked up both points by default with Samantha Pickard and Anna Katenta winning at No. 5 and No. 6 singles respectively. The pair also combined for a win at No. 3 doubles by default.
Solana McMillan played well at No. 1 singles for UMES, falling to Nina Sebescen 6-0, 6-2. Sebescen's sister, Ana, topped Joycelyn Jackman 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2 singles. The two combined to win over McMillan and Jackman at No. 1 doubles, 8-1.
Coppin State also picked up the third and fourth singles wins with Kira Chapman falling 6-1, 6-0 and Alisia Belt falling 6-0, 6-0 respectively. They also paired up at No. 2 doubles, but fell 8-2.
The men fell to 2-11 on the season while the women were shutout and posted an 0-16 campaign. Interim head coach Harold Fowler, made strides in his short stint, earning both of the men's wins.
"We improved some the latter half of the year," said Fowler. "We hope to carry that over to next year and along with some recruiting, get UMES tennis back on track."
