PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - Norfolk State University's Sarah Spanka and Meagan Long combined for nine RBIs and five runs to help the Spartans defeat the University of Maryland Eastern Shore, 11-0 and 10-4, in an afternoon doubleheader at Lady Hawks Field.
Spanka finished the day 3-for-5 with six RBIs, three runs and two doubles while Long was 5-for-8 with three RBIs, two runs and one double as NSU improves their season record to 12-24.
The Lady Hawks fall to 1-27 on the season and were led by sophomore Britney McLeod (Palmyra, N.J.) who went 2-for-4 on the day with two RBIs. Junior Kyrus Whitehurst (Virginia Beach, Va.) went 2-for-3 with one run and one stolen base in the second game, to finish the day 2-for-5.
The UMES bats struggled once again, getting just three hits in the first game of the day.
The Spartans scored first on the day, getting four runs on two hits in the second inning. They went on to get four more in the sixth inning before taking the game, 11-0.
In the second game, the Lady Hawks had a productive second inning, scoring four runs on five hits.
Junior Ebony Hahn (Groveport, Ohio) started the inning with a single to the shortstop. Freshman Jasmine James (Willingboro, N.J.) then walked before three straight singles by Whitehurst, freshman Shanice Crowder (Baltimore, Md.) and McLeod. Junior Inde Whitehurst (Virginia Beach, Va.) also got a single before the end of the inning.
UMES held NSU scoreless through three but were unable to keep the Spartans in check in the top of the fourth inning as they scored nine runs on six hits and five walks.
NSU scored one more run in the sixth inning, as they would go on to win, 10-4.
The Lady Hawks have off for a week before hosting Coppin State for a doubleheader on Saturday, May 1, starting at 1 p.m.
