Box Score
PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - Freshman right-hander Donnie Haines (Carneys Point, N.J.) pitched a complete game, earning his first collegiate win, 4-2, in Game 1 of the University of Maryland Eastern Shore baseball team's non-conference doubleheader with Lehigh Tuesday at Hawks Stadium.
Haines, the reigning MEAC Rookie of the Week (1-8), went seven innings, scattering six hits, four walks and two earned runs in his 109-pitch outing to help the Hawks to their first non-conference home win. UMES dropped the second game of the day, 4-0, falling to 5-35 on the season. With the split, Lehigh is 17-24. Haines, whose earned run average fell by more than two-and-a-half points with the performance, struck out to Lehigh batters.
Fellow freshman Tre-Von Johnson (East New Market, Md.) led the Hawks at the plate in the win, going 2-for-2 with a triple, run scored and an RBI. UMES outhit the Mountain Hawks, 8-6, in the first game, getting hits from seven different players.
UMES wasted little time getting on the scoreboard in the bottom of the first inning. Senior Phil Vaughn (Clinton, Md.) walked to start things off and moved to second on a groundout. He went to third when pitcher Jordan Warncke's pickoff throw sailed into center field and came home on Johnson's RBI single up the middle with one out.
A two-out single to right-center field by Alex Jacuez knotted the game in the top of the second. Joe Conaway scored from third before Haines caught O'Malley looking to end the frame.
Sophomore second baseman Shaquille Bagwell (Atlantic, Va.) put UMES back on top in the fourth with a run-scoring single to left and tallied the eventual winning run on a wild pitch, all with two outs in the inning. After Nick Wiggins (Littleton, Colo.) and Lucas Koenig (Berlin, Md.) went down in order, freshman Lorenzo Christy (Germantown, Md.) singled to keep the inning alive, moving into scoring position on a balk. Bagwell's base hit put the Hawks up 2-1. Vaughn followed with a bouncer through the right side and stole second prior to the wild pitch.
Lehigh got back within one at 3-2 in the top of the fifth on a Jim McConologue RBI groundout, but Johnson led off the bottom of the inning with his fourth triple of the season and was plated with an Elliott Alston sacrifice fly to center for insurance.
Warncke (0-1) took the loss on the mound for the Mountain Hawks in four innings. He allowed three runs on six hits and two walks before giving way to Brandon Sady for the final two innings.
Brendan McGaheran and Billy Goldman each had two hits for Lehigh in the opener.
In the second game, Lehigh scored three runs in the second inning off junior righty Matt Witte (Westminster, Md.) to cruise to victory. Witte last four frames, surrendered all four runs on seven hits and to fall to 2-5 on the season. McGaheran was 2-for-4 with two runs driven in and a stolen base to pace the visitors.
Johnson had another two hits - including his fourth double - for the Hawks.
All three Lehigh runs in the second came courtesy of base hits up the middle of the infield as the Mountain Hawks sent seven to the plate.
Ross Biggs made it 1-0 with a single scoring Sean Killeen with no one out. After a fielder's choice Jacquez and McGaheran put together consecutive base hits to extend the lead.
Conaway added an unearned run in the fifth off Cameron Zimmerman (Harrisburg, Pa.) in the fifth to round the scoring. He reached on a throwing error by Alston, moving to second on a wild pitch with two gone and was chased home with McGaheran hit to right center.
Rob Russell (1-2) went all seven innings for a complete-game shutout on just eight hits and no walks. He struck out three using 92 pitches.
UMES heads to Daytona Beach, Fla., this weekend for a three-game set with conference unbeaten Bethune-Cookman. The teams will play at 1 p.m. Saturday at Jackie Robinson Ballpark and conclude the set Sunday with a doubleheader, also at 1.
