PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - Coppin State sophomore pitcher Paige Arnold had two more spectacular outings as the Lady Eagles defeated the University of Maryland Eastern Shore, 10-0 and 10-2, in a doubleheader at Lady Hawks Field.

Arnold earned both wins on the day and pitched a combined 8.0 innings, striking out eight and walking none while giving up two runs (both earned) on six hits. She also helped her cause from the plate, going 4-for-6 on the day with a home run, two doubles, a stolen base, five runs and three RBIs.

In the first game of the afternoon, only four Lady Hawks got hits. Junior Inde Whitehurst (Virginia Beach, Va.) led off the first inning with a single up the middle and then advanced to second on a passed ball. Arnold then sat down the next eight batters before being replaced by Tiffani Whaley.

The UMES half of the fourth inning also started with a single, this time by junior Chelsea Logan (Trenton, N.J.). She was able to make her way to third through the next two batters but was unable to score before the inning ended.

The Lady Hawks looked to make a comeback in the bottom of the fifth inning as they got singles from sophomores Cy'Anna Scott (Paterson, N.J.) and Kristi Miranda (Houston, Texas) but were unable to capitalize and fell, 10-0.

The second game started off with a bang for UMES as Inde Whitehurst led off with a triple to right center and then scored off of a single to left field by junior Kyrus Whitehurst (Virginia Beach, Va.). Logan got her second hit of the day with a single down the right field line and received an RBI as Kyrus Whitehurst scored the second run of the inning.

CSU responded immediately in the top of the second inning, scoring five runs on two hits and one error, to go up, 5-2.

The Lady Hawks got two hits in the second and third innings, with singles by Miranda and Kyrus Whitehurst.

Freshman pitcher Shanice Crowder (Baltimore, Md.) then saw the minimum of six Lady Eagle batters in the third and fourth innings before allowing three runs on five hits in the next two innings.

CSU pitchers Arnold and Whaley pitched a perfect final three innings to grab the win for the Lady Eagles in six innings, 10-2.

Four UMES players had two hits on the day and were led by Kyrus Whitehurst, who finished 2-for-5 with a run and RBI. Inde Whitehurst also was 2-for-5 with a run and also had a triple. Logan finished 2-for-5 with an RBI while Miranda was 2-for-4.

The Lady Hawks fall to 1-29 on the season and continue to look for their first win in Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference play as they move to 0-11. CSU ends the day 19-19 overall and 6-5 in the MEAC.

The Lady Hawks finish the season series against CSU tomorrow at 1 p.m. at Lady Hawks Field.
