PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - The opponent's bats came out once again as the Howard University softball team collected 14 hits to defeat the University of Maryland Eastern Shore, 7-0, at Lady Hawks Field Saturday afternoon.

The Lady Hawks collected five hits while stranding nine runners, including leaving the bases loaded in the third and sixth innings.

UMES bats started to get hot in the bottom of the third inning with consecutive singles by senior Ashley Johnson (Temple Hills, Md.) and junior Inde Whitehurst (Virginia Beach, Va.). Junior Chelsea Logan (Trenton, N.J.) walked with one out to load the bases.

Johnson was out at home on a hit by redshirt junior Ebony Hahn (Groveport, Ohio) who was then called out at first on runner's interference for going out of the base line.

Sophomore Kristi Miranda (Houston, Texas) singled to lead off the bottom of the fourth inning and advanced on a walk by freshman Jasmine James (Willingboro, N.J.). Both runners advanced a base on a passed ball before the end of the inning left them stranded.

The Lady Hawks loaded the bases with one out with a walk by freshman Shanice Crowder (Baltimore, Md.), a single up the middle by James and sophomore Cy'Anna Scott (Paterson, N.J.) reaching base on an error by Howard shortstop Rebecca Kirshner. Johnson then hit into a 1-2-3 double play to end the inning.

UMES was unable to rally in the bottom of the seventh inning as the Lady Bison held them to the minimum three batters.

The game was delayed for a half hour in the bottom of the second inning with James at bat due to lightning.

The Lady Hawks continue to look for their first Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference win as they fall to 0-13 in conference play and 1-31 overall. Howard continues to stand atop the MEAC North standings with a 12-1 conference record and 22-20 overall.

UMES wraps up their season with a doubleheader against the Lady Bison beginning at noon. Please note the starting time change.
