PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - Junior Zoe Bowens (Long Beach, Calif.) and sophomore Basil Melek (Grand Prairie, Texas) have been named University of Maryland Eastern Shore Athletes of the Week for the period ending Sept. 12.

Bowens, an outside hitter on the women's volleyball team, helped the Hawks to a 2-1 record at the Art Carmichael URI Volleyball Invitational.

Bowens was named to the all-tournament team with a 2.69 kills per game average with 11 digs and six aces. Bowens hit .222 on the weekend with 35 kills and 13 errors in 99 attacks.

UMES (3-7) is back in action Sept. 17-18 at the Kristin Dickmann Memorial Tournament, hosted by Navy.

Melek, of the cross country team finished second overall in the men's race, helping UMES to a sweep of both the men's and women's events in the Delaware State Open. The cross country team hosts the Cappy Anderson Invitational Saturday on the UMES Cross Country Course.
