NORFOLK, Va. - Freshman Joseph Swift (Brooklyn, N.Y.) was named the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Rookie of the Week, the conference announced Monday evening.
Swift, a 5-10 guard, averaged 10.0 points, 2.5 rebounds and 3.0 steals against North Carolina Central and Florida A&M last week. At NCCU, he recorded 13 points and was a perfect 5-of-5 from the field while collecting four steals and dishing out four assists.
In Saturday's home overtime win over Florida A&M, Swift posted seven points, four boards, three assists and two steals in 19 minutes of action.
"JoJo is well deserving of this award," stated head coach Frankie Allen. "He's provided a big lift to our team in recent games and we'll continue to be successful with him on the court. As the season progresses, he'll continue to hold a significant role on the floor."
Redshirt junior Hillary Haley (Oxon Hill, Md.) and junior Tyler Hines (Sicklerville, N.J.) were listed as "Other Top Performers" for the week.
Haley led UMES with 15 points against NCCU and 20 points and seven rebounds against FAMU while Hines posted 11 points, eight rebounds and one block against the Rattlers.
Haley, Hines and Swift return to the court as the Hawks host the Coppin State Eagles at 4 p.m. Saturday at the W.P. Hytche Athletic Center.
