PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - Freshman Saitaua Iosia(Long Beach, Calif.) and sophomore Gregory Raad (Bel Air, Md.) have been named the Peninsula Regional Medical Center University of Maryland Eastern Shore Athletes of the Week for the week of October 24. This is the third time Iosia has been distinguished while Raad is honored for the first time this year.
Iosia led the UMES volleyball team to two Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference victories this past week as she registered 21 kills, 10 digs and four service aces to propel the Hawks to victories over Delaware State University and Howard University. She posted team-highs in kills (12) and digs (six) in the Hawks' 3-0 victory over the Hornets before tallying nine kills and four digs in UMES' 3-1 victory over Howard. This award proved to be Iosia's 10th of the season as she has claimed the past seven Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Rookie of the Week honors to compliment her three PRMC UMES Athlete of the Week distinctions.
Raad was the highest finisher for the UMES golf team at the Donald Ross Intercollegiate held Oct. 17-18 at the par-72, 6,540-yard Mimosa Hills Golf and Country Club in Morganton, N.C. The sophomore led the Hawks with two rounds of 79 on day one, followed by an 82 on the final day to finish at 240 (+30), taking 58th place. Raad's effort in the tournament proved to be his best round of the year as he paced the team to an 11th place finish.
The volleyball team squares off in a rematch against Howard as they travel to play the Bison on Friday, Oct. 28 at 6 p.m., before hosting four consecutive home MEAC matches to conclude the regular season.
The golf team will take a week off before competing in the Savannah State University Invitational held in Savannah, Ga., on Nov. 5-6. The tournament is the final bout of action for the golf team this season.
