PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - Senior Zoe Bowens (Long Beach, Calif.) and junior Basil Melek (Grand Prairie, Texas) have been named the Peninsula Regional Medical Center University of Maryland Eastern Shore Athletes of the Week for the week of Nov. 14. This is the sixth time this season that Melek has been distinguished with the award, while Bowens receives it for the first time.
Bowens used a seven kill, 11 dig performance to lead the volleyball team to a 3-1 victory over Hampton University on Sunday. The senior also posted a game-high four service aces and had one block in the final home match of her collegiate career. Her efforts in the contest against Hampton were backed up by an impressive performance in the Hawks' 3-0 blanking of Norfolk State University earlier in the week. Bowens registered a game-high 10 digs with four digs and one service ace.
Melek once again led the charge for the men's cross country team, when he posted a 30th place finish at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional this past weekend. The junior finished the 10k race in 31:20.0, which proved to be 80 places higher than his closest teammate. His 5k time in the race (15:38.8) stood 13th amongst the 183 competitors.
The men's cross country team concluded their season at the regional meet while the volleyball team travels to Baltimore, Md., to compete in the MEAC Championship this weekend. The women will begin their postseason play with a bout against North Carolina Central University on Friday, Nov. 18 at 1 p.m.
