PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - It was a light schedule for the University of Maryland Eastern Shore athletics program this week as only three contests enjoyed action. The women's basketball team dropped a pair of games while the men's basketball team picked up a win at home. The week featured outstanding performances by several student-athletes and quality team efforts in each contest.
The action did not end there as several Hawks athletic programs participated in goodwill efforts as well. Their actions included volunteer work with Operation Teddy Bear and bell ringing for the Salvation Army.
Let's take a look at the action from this past week:
MEN'S BASKETBALL
The men's basketball team picked up a big win against Mercy College, 95-69, at the William P. Hytche Center on Sunday afternoon. The men jumped out to a lead quickly and did not relinquish it as four Hawks tallied double-digit points in the win. Freshman guard Ishaq Pitt had a game-high 18 points and shot an impressive 75 percent (6-of-8) from the field. Junior guard Percy Woods posted his first double-double of the season with 16 points and 10 assists.
Woods' efforts allowed him to being distinguished as the men's recipient of the PRMC UMES Athlete of the Week for the week of Dec. 12.
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
The women's basketball team went 0-2 this week as the Lady Hawks fell to the University of Maryland - Baltimore County, 65-60 and to Pennsylvania State University, 76-51.
Despite the two losses, the women stood tall against a pair of quality opponents. They fared well in the first halves of each game, as the women opened each contest with solid efforts on both sides of the ball.
UMES and UMBC locked up in a thriller on Tuesday night as the two squads played a close game with 12 lead changes and seven ties. The Lady Hawks would eventually fall after UMBC caught fire late but it did not shadow the effort of senior guard Chelsea Sanders, who tied a career-high with 17 points. Senior guard Amber Cook paced the team with eight points and four assists.
In UMES' game against Penn State on Sunday afternoon, sophomore forward Shanyce Stewart stole the show. Stewart led a women's charge that collected 46 rebounds, 22 of which came from the offensive side of the ball. UMES was very much in the contest for the majority of the first half, but three big runs in the game by PSU proved to be too much for UMES to overcome.
UMES was also paced by Cook, who notched nine-rebounds and a team-high 12 points. Sanders had four rebounds and six points, while senior forward Adobi Agbasi had eight points and three blocks in the losing effort.
Cook's efforts allowed her to being distinguished as the women's recipient of the PRMC UMES Athlete of the Week for the week of Dec. 12. It was the first time she collected the award this season.
UPCOMING WEEK (Dec. 12-Dec. 19)
The women's basketball looks to get back to its winning ways when the women travel to Towson University on Tuesday, Dec. 13 at 7 p.m. The Lady Hawks will then hit the road for a matchup in Tampa, Fla., when they square off with the University of South Florida on Saturday, Dec. 17 at 2 p.m.
