Final Stats
CARY, N.C. - Sophomore Jasmine James (Willingboro, N.J.) and freshman Charlise Castro (Saugerties, N.Y.) each went 3-for-6 with one run and two RBI on the day as the University of Maryland Eastern Shore softball team defeated Barton College, 6-3, but fell, 16-0, to Western Carolina Sunday at the North Carolina Central University Lady Eagles Tournament at Thomas Brooks Park.
In the first game of the day, the Lady Hawks scored first against Barton College, posting three runs in the bottom of the first inning. Castro doubled to left center for her first RBI on the day as freshman Jade Nelson (Lithonia, Ga.) scored. James followed suit with a ground-rule double to allow sophomore Carmen Gurrola (Arleta, Calif.) and Castro to score.
UMES went up 4-1 in the bottom of the second inning as Castro recorded an RBI single to score Nelson.
The Lady Hawks scored another run in the bottom of the third with an RBI single to right center from senior Kyrus Whitehurst (Virginia Beach, Va.). Junior McKenzie Davis (Salisbury, Md.), who previously reached via fielder's choice, scored on the play to put UMES up, 5-1.
With two outs in the fourth inning, James singled to first base and advanced to third on a single to center from Davis. Davis proceeded to steal second base and advanced to third on a throw home as James crossed the plate to secure another run for the Lady Hawks and put the score at 6-1.
The Bulldogs scored two runs on three hits in the top of the sixth inning, but it wasn't enough as UMES took their first win of the season to move to 1-2. Barton falls to 2-7 with the loss.
Senior Jessica McFadden went 3-for-3 on the day for the Bulldogs while junior Emily Jordan went 2-for-3 with two runs and one RBI.
Gurrola earned the win for the Lady Hawks, giving up just one run (earned) and four hits in 4.0 innings pitched.
In the second game of the day, UMES matched up with Western Carolina, who they previously played and lost to on Saturday.
The Lady Hawks managed just three hits against the Catamounts and tallied five errors as WCU recorded 16 runs on 14 hits to take the 16-0 win.
UMES was unable to recover from an 11-run first inning from the Catamounts and fell to 1-3 on the season. With the win, WCU improved to 4-0 on the short season.
The Lady Hawks travel to Montgomery, Ala. next weekend to take on Alabama State University. The two teams will play a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m. on Saturday and follow up with a noon single game on Sunday.
