Feb. 18, 2011

Box Score

FOREST CITY, N.C. - Tyler Tewell went 2-for-5 with two RBI and Hector Crespo was 2-for-4 with two runs scored as Appalachian State defeated the University of Maryland Eastern Shore baseball team, 4-0, in the season opener for both at McNair Field Friday.

Zack Briggs had two doubles and a run while Tre-Von Johnson (East New Market, Md.) led UMES with two hitsin four at-bats.

UMES kept the high-powered ASU offense at bay for most of the day as right-hander Jacob Foreman (Little Orleans, Md.) worked his way out of several jams, allowing three runs on nine hits in five innings.

Down, 3-0, in the top of the eighth, the Hawks mounted their best threat. Shaquille Bagwell (Atlantic, Va.) singled through the left side with one out and Johnson followed with a base hit to the gap in right-center field to bring up preseason All-MEAC selection Bryan Chaikowsky (Bethlehem, Pa.). Appalachian State reliever Jordan Jessup, who came to start the inning, got Chaikowsky swinging and James Newsome (Mechanicsville, Md.) lined out to end the frame.

Trey Holmes plated Crespo in the bottom of the eighth for the final margin.

Crespo led off the bottom of the first with a triple to right and Tewell singled him in for a 1-0 lead. Foreman (0-1), making his first Division I start, loaded the bases. He allowed a hit and walk but induced a popup to end the inning.

Foreman stranded Briggs on third base in the second inning, keeping the Mountaineers off the board. After Briggs laced a double to the gap and left center and advanced on an over throw, Foreman settled in and retired the side.

Tyler Zupcic doubled to start the last of the fourth, moving to third on a foul out. Doug Jones reached on a bunt single and stole second. Crespo walked to load the bases and Tewell hit into a fielder's choice to extend the lead to 2-0.

The Mountaineers added one more in the sixth. Briggs again doubled to begin the inning. Karim Gonzalez (Mexico, City, Mexico) came in for Foreman and surrendered a bunt single but catcher Nick Wiggins' (Littleton, Colo.) throw went up the line, allowing Briggs to score from second.

Gonzalez was solid out of the bullpen, going two innings, allowing just the one hit and two walks and striking out three.

Nathan Hyatt (1-0) earned the win for Appalachian State in five innings. He struck out six, allowed two hits and two walks.

The teams play again Saturday at 3 p.m.
