UMES FALLS TO APPALACHIAN STATE, 9-0, IN SERIES FINALE

FOREST CITY, N.C. - Seth Grant and two relief pitchers combined to hold the University of Maryland Eastern Shore baseball team to three hits and three players drove in two runs apiece as Appalachian State completed a series sweep, 9-0, at McNair Field Sunday.

Grant (1-0) allowed two hits and one walk with five strikeouts over six innings while Tyler Jackson and Chad Farmer gave up one hit and one walk with two strikeouts.

Trey Holmes hit 3-for-3 with a double and two RBI and Zack Briggs was 2-for-4 with a double and pair of runs driven to lead the Appalachian State (3-0) 12-hit offense. Tre-Von Johnson (East New Market, Md.) was 2-for-3 for UMES (0-3) with an eighth-inning triple. Elliott Alston (Littleton, Colo.) reached on a fourth-inning infield single for the Hawks' other base hit.

Holmes put the Mountaineers on the board in bottom of the first, doubling to left-center field off Tyler Witte (Westminster, Md.) to score Hector Crespo from third and Jeremy Dowdy from first. Briggs followed with a single up the middle to score Holmes.

Up 5-0, Appalachian State added two runs in both the seventh and eighth innings. Holmes had a one-out single in the seventh and Briggs' double to left plated him to make it 6-0. Ryan Arrowhead then walked and Tyler Zupcic doubled to right center to score Briggs.

In the eighth, Tyler Tewell and Lawrence Pardo scored on a two-out throwing error for the final margin.

Witte (0-1) took the loss in six innings on the mound. He surrendered seven hits, six walks and five runs while fanning two.

UMES opens its home schedule Tuesday against George Washington at 2:30 p.m.
