Final Stats

MONTGOMERY, Ala. - They were close fought battles, but the University of Maryland Eastern Shore fell, 6-5, 10-8 and 10-9 in a three-game weekend series to Alabama State at Lagoon Park.

Charlise Castro (Saugerties, N.Y.) continues to make a major impact in her freshman season as she went a combined 8-for-11 (.727) over the series with five runs, eight RBI and two doubles.

Sophomore Carmen Gurrola (Arleta, Calif.) also showed her new team her worth as she went .500 on the weekend (4-for-8) with four runs and three RBI.

In the first game of Saturday's doubleheader, the Lady Hawks jumped out to a quick five-run lead in the top of the first inning.

Both Gurrola and sophomore Jasmine James (Willingboro, N.J.) cranked out triples with no outs in the inning to score four runs. James scored on a sacrifice from freshman Yasmin Lee (Greensboro, N.C.).

The Lady Hornets held UMES scoreless for the rest of the game and responded with six runs of their own to take game one, 6-5.

In the second game of the day, the Lady Hawks scored three runs in the top of the second inning to go up, 3-2. UMES continued to get extra base hits as Castro and freshman Lisa Bates (Blauvelt, N.Y.) each hit doubles in the inning.

With the game tied, 4-4, in the top of the sixth inning, UMES plated two runs with an error, two walks and a double from senior Kyrus Whitehurst (Virginia Beach, Va.) to take a 6-4 lead.

The Lady Hornets responded with six runs in the bottom of the inning off of eight hits to take a 10-6 lead going into the seventh inning.

The Lady Hawks mounted a comeback and scored two runs on a triple from Castro and single from James. UMES left one runner stranded and weren't able to score the final two runs to tie ASU and fell, 10-8, to wrap up Saturday's doubleheader.

It took the teams extra innings to find a winner in Sunday's finale.

The Lady Hawks took a 7-5 lead with a six-run fourth inning off of four hits and two consecutive errors. Castro homered with Gurrola and Whitehurst on base.

Castro hit her second home run of the game, this time a two-run shot, in the top of the sixth inning to take a 9-6 lead over the Lady Hornets.

ASU countered with three runs in the bottom of the inning to tie things at nine-all and send the game into extra innings.

A single from Mercedes Frazier in the bottom of the eighth scored Brehanna Rodrigues to take the win for the Lady Hornets.

Sophomore Whitney Golson went 7-for-9 on the weekend for ASU.

With the sweep, UMES falls to 1-6 on the season while the Lady Hornets moved to 3-5 overall.

The Lady Hawks take Homecoming weekend off before traveling to the Hampton Lady Pirates Classic from March 4-6. UMES will take on Canisius, Central Connecticute State, Maris and Fairleigh Dickinson in the tournament.
