PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - George Washington sent 11 batters to the plate in the top of the eighth inning, scoring six runs, to break open a tight game and defeat the University of Maryland Eastern Shore baseball team, 8-0, at Hawks Stadium on Wednesday.
Down 2-0, in the eighth, Brendon Kelliher led off the inning with an infield single and moved to second on a passed ball. After a groundout, pinch hitter Justin Albright singled to right field, followed by an RBI base hit by Kyle Gelling. Albright, who went to third on play, came in on a fielder's choice bunt to the pitcher to make it 4-0.
Jimmy Best then rapped a double down the right-field line to score Ollie Mittag and Gelling. Later in the frame, Kelliher hit a two-run single to left to score two more for the final margin.
The big inning spoiled a solid outing for starter Karim Gonzalez (Mexico, City, Mexico) and UMES pitching staff, which held George Washington (2-2) to two runs and five hits in seven innings.
Gonzalez (0-1) took the loss for UMES (0-4), going five innings and allowing two hits and one run while walking two and fanning five. He kept the Hawks in the game while they were held to just three hits and a walk by Tom Gateley (1-0) and three Colonial relievers.
The top three hitters in the GW batting order were 6-for-11 with three runs and two RBI to lead its 10-hit offense. Kelliher was 2-for-4 with a run scored, two RBI and a stolen base.
Byron Campbell (Waldorf, Md.) paced UMES with a 2-for-3 effort out of the 6-hole in the lineup. Tre-Von Johnson (East New Market, Md.) also went 1-for-3 with two stolen bases.
After the Colonials pushed across a run in the top of the first with a double steal of home and second, UMES threatened in the fourth. Johnson started things off with a sharp single to right and stole second. Bryan Chaikowsky (Bethlehem, Pa.) walked and James Newsome (Mechancsville, Md.) bunted the runners to second and third but a popup and groundout ended the innings.
Johnson was stranded on third in the sixth. He was hit by a pitch and stole second, moving to third on a on a Chaikowsky flyout. Newsome grounded to third for the second out and Elliott Alston (Littleton, Colo.) struck out swinging for the third.
UMES left four runs on base on the day.
George Washington scored an unearned run in the top of the seventh on a pair of errors to push the lead to 2-0.
UMES continues its nine-game homestand Sunday at noon with a doubleheader against Fairleigh Dickinson.
