PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore baseball team dropped a doubleheader to Longwood, 5-3 and 3-1, at Hawks Stadium Tuesday despite holding one-run leads in the final innings of both games.
UMES was up, 1-0, entering the seventh of the second game but allowed Longwood to tie with an unearned run and then added two more in the eighth for the win after scoring three in the seventh inning of Game 1 to take that contest.
Jeffrey Fleetwood (Delmar, Md.) was unable to come up with a ball at first base hit by pinch hitter Alex Owens to start the seventh inning in the nightcap, putting the tying run on first. Robby Newman followed with a single and D.J. Pomposini moved the runners to second and third with a sacrifice bunt. Dustin Sollars then drove the first pitch he saw from position-player-turned-reliever James Newsome (Mechanicsville, Md.) into right field for a sacrifice fly, scoring Owens from third.
The Hawks did not score in their half of the inning and the Lancers received RBI singles from Justin Lacy and Matt Dickason to spoil a solid outing by Bernard Parker (Waldorf, Md.). Parker earned a no decision in seven innings, scattering three hits and one run. He walked three and struck out two in 107 pitches.
The game was scoreless until the bottom of the fourth when Byron Campbell (Waldorf, Md.) drew a two-out walk and Fleetwood reached on a throwing error by the shortstop to put runners on first and second. Stephen Bull (Millsboro, Del.) then lined a single up the middle to put UMES on top, 1-0.
Newman led Longwood (4-5), going 2-for-4 in the game while Lacy, Owens and Michael Sims scored runs. Tre-Von Johnson (East New Market, Md.), Bryan Chaikowsky (Bethlehem, Pa.), Shaquille Bagwell (Atlantic, Va.) and Bull tallied hits for UMES (1-8).
Troy Dickman (1-0) earned the win for Longwood in two innings on the mound, allowing two hits with two strikeouts. Cody Cauffman (Salisbury, Md.) took the loss, surrendering two runs on two hits in a third of an inning. Cauffman (0-1) also fanned two batters.
UMES took a 3-0 lead in the third inning of the first game. Johnson, who singled to start the inning scored on a throwing error when Chaikowsky stole second to make it 1-0. Newsome then reached on an error by the shortstop, scoring Chaikowsky. Three batters later, Campbell singled up the middle to plate Newsome.
The Lancers added single runs in the fifth and sixth innings on a Brant Jones RBI single and Newman sacrifice fly to cut the deficit to 3-2.
In the seventh, Newsome surrendered a RBI singles to Owens and Dickason and Mark Montgomery pitched the bottom of the seventh with two strikeouts for his first of two saves on the day.
Both starters Karim Gonzalez (Mexico City, Mexico) for UMES and Cory Ramsey pitched well but did not factor in the decision. Gonzalez went five innings, allowing five hits and one runs with six strikeouts and two walks while Ramsey last 5.1 innings and gave up nine hits and three runs with six strikeouts and a walk.
Dickason went 3-for-4 with two RBI and Johnson hit 3-for-4 with a triple and run.
UMES opens a three-game series with Long Island on Friday at Hawks Stadium. First pitch is slated for 2:30 p.m.
