Game One Final Stats | Game Two Final Stats
PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - Marist University scored four runs in the top of the seventh inning to overtake the University of Maryland Eastern Shore softball team, 8-4, in game one of a doubleheader and used that momentum to take a 12-4 win in five innings in game two Wednesday afternoon at Lady Hawks Field.
Freshman Amber Corrigan (Montgomery, N.Y.) paced the UMES offense by going 4-for-5 with four runs and one RBI on the day. Sophomore Carmen Gurrola (Arleta, Calif.) went 2-for-5 with one run while freshman Charlise Castro (Saugerties, N.Y.) was 2-for-6 with five RBI, one run and one home run.
The Lady Hawks started the afternoon sloppily, giving up two runs on two errors in the first inning. They recovered one run in the bottom of the inning, but recorded another two errors in the top of the second inning to give the Red Foxes a 3-1 lead.
UMES tied the game in the bottom of the third inning with two walks, two hits and two runs.
Castro tied the game again for the Lady Hawks at in the bottom of the fifth at 4-4 with an RBI single to left center, scoring Corrigan.
Marist played small ball in the top of the seventh, tallying four runs on four hits, to take game one, 8-4.
The Red Foxes immediately scored two runs in the first inning of game two before UMES came roaring back with a lead-off triple by senior Kyrus Whitehurst (Virginia Beach, Va.) and three-run home run to centerfield by Castro to take a 4-2 lead.
Unfortunately for the Lady Hawks, Marist took no time recovering those four runs as they tallied four of their own in the next half inning to retake the game at 6-4.
Slow and steady won game two for the Red Foxes as they continued to score three runs in the third, one in the fourth and two in the fifth while holding UMES scoreless and to two hits over the final four innings.
Three junior had huge games for Marist as Megan Lamoureux went 5-for-7 with two doubles, seven runs and three RBI, Ashley Corriss was 4-for-6 with six runs and two RBI and Nicole DiVirgilio went 5-for-9 with one run and six RBI.
The Lady Hawks move to 1-16 on the season while the Red Foxes improve to 10-9.
UMES hits the road again and will play North Carolina Central, Mount St. Mary's and Delaware State in Dover, Del. at the Delaware State Demarini Capital Classic. Saturday and Sunday.
