HAWKS FALL, 14-3, AT LEHIGH

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Brendan McGaheran went 3-for-5 with two runs scored and one driven in and five others had two hits apiece as Lehigh defeated the University of Maryland Eastern Shore baseball team, 14-3, at Goodman Campus on Wednesday. Lehigh (15-8) used 16 hits and scored runs in six innings to win its six consecutive game. UMES (3-21) had seven hits on the day and fell for the second straight time.

Tre-Von Johnson (East New Market, Md.) batted 2-for-4 with one walk, while Shaquille Bagwell (Atlantic, Va.) and Bryan Chaikowsky (Bethlehem, Pa.) each collected RBI.

Steven Ball (1-1) and three Lehigh relief pitchers combined to hold UMES scoreless for eight innings. Ball earned the win, going five innings, allowing just two hits and four walks. He struck out five batters.

Bernard Parker (Waldorf, Md.) was tagged with the loss in three innings of work. Parker (0-4), making his second start of the season, gave up four hits and six earned runs while walking four with one strikeout.

Down, 14-0, heading to the ninth, UMES scored its only three runs, sending nine men to the plate. Lorenzo Christy (Germantown, Md.) coaxed a pinch-hit walk and advanced to second on a wild pitch by Mountain Hawks' pitcher John Saleh. Brent Lewis (Salisbury, Md.) then singled in a pinch-hitting role, putting runners on first and third. Two batthers latter Bahwell singled and moved to second on an error, scoring both.

Later in the inning, Chaikowsky singled in Bagwell with two outs.

Lehigh opened the scoring with three runs in the first inning. The first four Mountain Hawks reached McGaheran drew a leadoff walk and was driven home on a double to center field by Billy Goldman. After a walk put runners on first and second and a double steal moved them up, Kevin Mihalik snuck a double down the left-field line to extend the lead to 3-0.

Lehigh added three more in the third on an Austin Borden two-run single to left and a Brandon Pifer sacrifice fly.

The Mountain Hawks used five hits in the fifth to go up, 11-0. Three straight hits off reliever Zachary Saca (Elk Grove, Calif.) produced a run before a wild pitch advanced runners to Pifer and Borden to second and third. Joe Abeln followed with a two-RBI double to push the score to 9-0. Two batters later, McGaheran had a double of his own. Ross Biggs also had an RBI single in the frame.

UMES is back in action at Delaware State for a three-game MEAC series Saturday and Sunday. First pitch at Soldier Field both days in 1 p.m.
