Box Score
PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) offense couldn't find its way in game three of the series with Delaware State University (DSU) as the Hornets topped the Hawks 10-0, completing the series sweep. The loss spoils a solid outing from UMES' Carmen Gurrola (Arleta, Calif.) who allowed just five hits over the first six innings.
The two teams played scoreless ball for three innings. While Gurrola allowed just a hit an inning, her counterpart, Ashlyn Campbell was even better pitching a hitless first three innings allowing just one walk, that in the second to Jasmine James (Willingboro, N.J.).
It was the fourth inning where the Hornets took command. After getting a quick out, Gurrola walked the next two batters. Leslie Pleasanton would then lay down a beautiful sacrifice bunt that would go down as a fielder's choice as third baseman Shanice Crowder (Baltimore, Md.) wanted to go to third but had no play and the speedy Pleasanton would be safe at first. With the bases now loaded, Campbell would help her cause, recording a sacrifice fly to right to take a 1-0 lead. Chelsea Stern would then double to left center to plate two more runs. Jordan Reid then hit a ground ball to short that would be bobbled, allowing Stern to score to make it a 4-0 lead for DSU.
UMES would get two of their three hits in the bottom of the fourth as James would single up the middle with two outs and then go to second on a nearly identical hit by Gurrola. A wild pitch would advance both runners but the scoring threat was cut-short on an Ashley Johnson (Baltimore, Md.) ground ball for the third out.
Gurrola would retire the side in the top of the fifth allowing just one two-out walk. That would set-up a chance for the Lady Hawks in the bottom of the inning to close the gap. Crowder would lead-off with a single to center but two straight outs seemed to dim the Hawk Faithfull's spirit. Amber Corrigan (Montgomery, N.Y.) would then draw a two-out walk as did Lisa Bates (Blauvelt, N.Y.) to load the bases. Charlise Castro (Saugerties, N.Y.) would step-up, drawing cheers from the fans and looking to tie the game in one shot. Castro, who has a league-leading 11 home runs, would force DSU head coach Jeff Savage to make a pitching change and bring in Stephanie Sarris. It turned out to be the right move as Castro gave it a ride to deep left but the catch was made and DSU held UMES off the board.
The Hornets would go on to score three runs in each of the sixth and seventh innings and Sarris would keep the Hawks off the bases, throwing a perfect final two innings.
Stephanie Martello would go just 1-4 at the dish but record a pair of RBI. Stern also had a pair with a 1-2 effort. She also walked twice and scored twice.
Campbell got the win, throwing four innings, allowing just two hits and a walk. Sarris earned the save after getting out of the bases loaded jam in the fifth and finalizing the win. Gurrola took the loss, throwing six innings and allowing all 10 runs, six were earned. She struck out five.
UMES falls to 6-28 (1-5 MEAC) as DSU improves to 22-10 (5-1 MEAC).
The Lady Hawks will regroup and take on Morgan State in Baltimore next weekend, April 16 and 17th.
