PRINCESS ANNE, Md. -- On the softball Senior Day on Wednesday, UMES scored first in each game against Norfolk State but fell to the Spartans in both contests. The Hawks were defeated in game one 19-1 (5), regrouped and took Norfolk State to extras in the second matchup, but fell 3-1 (8). The team sits at 6-34 on the season.

Before the first pitch, coach Sam Douglas and UMES honored the three seniors, Chelsea Myers (Salina, Kan.), Kyrus Whitehurst (Virginia Beach, Va.) and Ashley Johnson (Temple Hills, Md), who were playing their last home game in a Hawks uniform.

In game one, the Hawks came out of the gate quickly. After Lisa Bates (Blauvelt, N.Y.) led off with a single, three batters later Charlise Castro (Saugerties, N.Y.) singled to right to bring Bates home from second for a 1-0 lead.

The advantage would be short-lived as Norfolk State put up three in the second and ten in the third. The Spartans would not allow another run to the Hawks and would win by the mercy rule 19-1 after five innings.

The second game began as a pitching duel between Norfolk State's Jamie Schulle and UMES's Carmen Gurrola (Arleta, Calif.) through the first four innings.

Then in the fifth, the Hawks broke the stalemate with an RBI single by Bates to score Cy'Anna Scott (Paterson, N.J.) to go up 1-0.

The Spartans tied the game the next half inning with a sacrifice fly by Jeanette Sauceda to score Danielle Wright.

The game would go into extra innings as the contest was tied 1-1. In the top of the eighth, the Spartans scored two runs and held on for the win 3-1.

Castro went a combined 3-for-6 with a double and an RBI. Bates and Amber Corrigan (Montgomery, N.Y.) hit safely in each contest.

UMES will resume conference play this weekend as they play a rescheduled match on Friday against Morgan State in Baltimore at 4:30 p.m.
