DELAWARE STATE CLAIMS SERIES WITH 14-4 VICTORY IN FINALE

DOVER, Del. - Delaware State's Ryan Haas batted 3-for-5 with three RBI doubles and five runs driven in and pitched a complete game on the mound as the Hornets won the rubber game of a three-game Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference baseball series, 14-4, over the University of Maryland Eastern Shore baseball team at Soldier Field on Sunday.

Delaware State (13-15, 2-1 MEAC) scored in all seven innings, collecting 18 hits, breaking open a 4-3 game after three-and-a-half innings with 19 runs over the final four innings. Eight DSU players got at least one hits while Scott Davis went 4-for-4 with four runs scored, three batted in, a stolen base and a walk.

Byron Campbell (Waldorf, Md.) led UMES (4-23, 3-3), going 3-for-3 at the plate with a double and a run scored. Nick Wiggins (Littleton, Colo.) also had two of the Hawks' eight hits and a run on the day.

Haas (2-0) went seven innings with one earned run, one walk and six strikeouts.

Karim Gonzalez (Mexico City, Mexico) lasted four innings for the Hawks on the mound, allowing six runs (five earned) on nine hits and four walks. Gonzalez (1-6), who took the loss, struck out three before giving way to three relievers.

Hass clubbed a run-scoring double to center field in the first inning and added a two-run double to left center in the second to stake the Hornets to a 3-0 lead. Joey Babuca chipped in with a double of his own in the third to score Cameron Cecil and extend it to a 4-0 advantage.

UMES responded in the top of the fourth to cut the deficit to one. Bryan Chaikowsky (Bethlehem, Pa.) doubled down the right-field line to lead off the inning and moved to third on a Haas balk. Franklin Armstrong (Trenton, N.J.) hit a sharp single up the middle to score Chaikowsky and get the Hawks on the scoreboard before advancing to second on a wild pitch.

Wiggins followed with an infield single to and moved up on a Cecil overthrow at third base. Then, with runners on second and third, Elliott Alston (Littleton, Colo.) made it 4-2 with an RBI groundout. UMES was not done yet, though.

Campbell hit a cue shot along first and reached third on two straight throwing errors on the play charged to first baseman Trey DeRouen to score Wiggins to move within one, 4-3.

The Hornets scored two runs in their half of the fourth and four more in the fifth to open a 10-3 advantage and cruised the rest of the way for the win.

UMES heads to Saint Peter's in Jersey City, N.J., for a doubleheader on Wednesday at Jaroschak Field beginning at 1 p.m.
