BALTIMORE -- Completing the previously postponed game three of their series with Morgan State, UMES took an early lead on the Lady Bears but fell 11-3 in the final contest in six innings. The Lady Hawks stand at 6-35 and 1-8 in the conference.
UMES got off to a strong start, riding a good beginning by pitcher Carmen Gurrola (Arleta, Calif.), who shut out Morgan State the first three innings.
In the top of the third, the Lady Hawks struck first. With a pair of runners on board, Jasmine James (Willingboro, N.J.) hit an RBI single to score Gurrola. With Charlise Castro (Saugerties, N.Y.) scoring on the play due to an error, UMES took an early 2-0 lead.
Morgan State put a run on the board in the fourth but Gurrola got out of the inning without further damage to preserve a 2-1 lead for the Lady Hawks.
However in the fifth, the Lady Bears put a six-spot on the board to take a 7-2 lead, the first time Morgan State had led all game.
Though Lauren Robertson (Brandywine, Md.) scored a run for UMES in the sixth to pull the team within four, Morgan State scored four in the bottom half of the inning to get a win by mercy rule over the Lady Hawks 11-3.
Gurrola ended the day at the plate 2-for-3, while Castro went 1-for-2 with a walk and a run.
The Lady Hawks will continue MEAC play in Baltimore with a series against Coppin State, beginning with a doubleheader on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. followed by a Sunday matinee at noon.
