UMES SWEPT IN THREE-GAME SET TO COPPIN STATE

BALTIMORE -- The Hawks had a tough task, trying to take down reigning MEAC Pitcher of the Year Paige Arnold of Coppin State, but the Eagles came up with a series sweep of UMES. Coppin State took each game of the Saturday doubleheader 6-0 and 14-0 then on the Sunday matinee 8-3. UMES now stands at 6-37 on the year and 1-10 in the conference.

In game one on Saturday, Amber Corrigan (Montgomery, N.Y.) started off strong with a shutout inning, but Coppin State put three runs on the board in the second followed by two in the third for a quick 5-0 lead. Corrigan added a pair of hits while in the lineup, but the Hawks fell 6-0 in game one.

The second game of the doubleheader was also a rough one for UMES, with Arnold holding down the Hawks to just one hit, that by Jasmine James (Willingboro, N.J.). UMES kept the game close as Coppin State led 2-0 after two frames, but the Eagles broke through with nine runs in the third inning, just one of them earned. Adding three in the fourth, the Eagles won 14-0 via the mercy rule after five innings.

UMES tried to regroup in game three and would give the Eagles a tough contest. Down 2-0 in the first against Arnold, Charlise Castro (Saugerties, N.Y.) led off with a home run, her 12th of the season, to left to bring the Hawks within one run.

The Hawks held down the Eagles in the bottom half of the second, but Coppin State responded with three in the third inning to go up 5-1.

In the top of the fourth, Carmen Gurrola (Arleta, Calif.) led off the inning with her second home run of the year to get the Hawks within three 5-2.

The Eagles would get three more runs in the bottom of the fifth, and though the Hawks got a run in the sixth with Castro scoring after James reached on error, Coppin State took game three 8-3 to get the sweep.

At the plate, Corrigan finished the three-game set going 4-for-7. Castro completed the series going 3-for-8 with a pair of runs scored on Sunday along with the home run.

UMES will play one more MEAC series this season as they take on Howard in Washington D.C. The Hawks will play a Saturday doubleheader on May 7th at 1:00 p.m. and a Sunday, May 8th game at noon.
