UMES COMEBACK FALLS SHORT, TEAM FALLS TO HOWARD 15-5

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- In their final game of the season, the Hawks scored four unanswered runs to attempt a comeback but fell short against Howard. UMES was defeated by the Bison 15-5 in five innings. The team finishes the year at 7-40 and 2-12 in the MEAC.

The Bison came out quickly with seven runs in the first. UMES got a run in the second off a two-out single by Jade Nelson (Lithonia, Ga.) to score Carmen Gurrola (Arleta, Calif.) to make the score 7-1. However, Howard rallied in the second for eight runs to get a 15-1 advantage.

After the Hawks held down the Bison in the third, UMES got a spark in the fourth inning. With one out and nobody on, Charlise Castro (Saugerties, N.Y.) hit a solo home run, her 13th of the season, to chip a run away from the deficit 15-2.

In the fifth, the Hawks offense got hot. With first and third with no outs, Amber Corrigan (Montgomery, N.Y.) jumped from first to steal second. On the throw, Lauren Robertson (Brandywine, Md.) scored from third. Next play, Kyrus Whitehurst (Virginia Beach, Va.) singled to bring home Corrigan to make the score 15-4. UMES got the bases loaded with two outs, where Nelson walked to bring home Whitehurst. However, the Bison got the next batter out on a ground out, ending the game via mercy rule 15-5.

UMES finishes the set taking the second game but falling in two to be defeated in the series.
