NAVY OUTSLUGS UMES, 14-3, ON SUNDAY

PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - Navy scored 13 runs over the final three innings to defeat the University of Maryland Eastern Shore baseball team, 14-3, at Hawks Stadium on Sunday.

UMES (8-38) scored first with a run in the bottom of the first and held a 2-1 edge through five innings but Navy (29-20-1) rallied for six in the seventh, three in the eighth and four in the ninth to claim the win.

Tyler Witte (Westminster, Md.) limited the Midshipmen to one run on three hits through six but did not record an out in the seventh as Navy received a RBI single from Taylor Cato to knot the game at one after Greg Duppell lead off the inning with a single to center field, advanced to second on a wild pitch and to third on a David Norman single.

Nick Driscoll then singled to load the bases which spelled the end for Witte. Bernard Parker (Waldorf, Md.) came in and surrendered a sacrifice fly to Kash Manzelli and a two-run single to right field by Jonathan Wright to score Driscoll and Cato for a 5-2 Navy lead. Brandon Beans added an RBI double and Alex Azor another sacrifice fly in the inning to lead, 7-2.

UMES got one run back in the bottom of the seventh on a Tre-Von Johnson (East New Market, Md.) run scoring single to right field that plated Lorenzo Christy (Germantown, Md.) from second. Christy reached on a fielder's choice and moved up on a balk before Johnson's two-out knock brought him home.

Consecutive fielder's choice RBIs pushed the Navy lead to 9-3 in the eighth and the Midshipmen tacked on an RBI double by Azor to open a 10-3 advantage.

Manzelli hit a two-run single to center field to highlight the four-run ninth inning. Beans had an RBI single to center to round out the scoring as UMES could get no closer.

UMES took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Johnson singled to led off the inning and advanced to second on a wild pitch before Elliott Alston (Littleton, Colo.) brought him in with an RBI single to center.

Navy knotted the game at 1-1 in the fifth with an RBI single by Manzelli prior to Shaquille Bagwell (Atlantic, Va.) ripping a one-out double. He then scored when James Newsome (Mechanicsville, Md.) reached on an error by the second baseman.

Wes Olson (6-1), the third pitcher of five on the day for Navy, earned the win on the mound. Olson went 2.2 innings, allowing two hits, two runs and fanned two. Witte (3-7) took the loss in six innings. He gave up seven hits and five runs with one walk and two strikeouts.

Manzelli led Navy, going 2-for-4 with five RBI and a run scored. Alston was 3-for-4 with an RBI for UMES.

UMES plays its final regular-season game at George Washington Tuesday at 4 p.m. at Barcroft Park in Arlington, Va.
