PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - University of Maryland Eastern Shore senior Zavior Brown has experienced many different things throughout his track career. Despite participating in three sports, transferring schools and overcoming several injuries; one constant has been seen.
Success.
Brown, a multiple All-American selection, has opened the 2012 season on fire. He led the Hawks to gold at the UMES Lid-Lifter with a second-place overall time of 17:15 on Sept. 1, before claiming seventh at the DSU Invitational a week later. The senior overcame an injury that put him out for the next two meets, but responded with a fifth-place time of 28:37.39 in the DSU Invitational 8k race on Oct. 6.
The middle distance runner is one of the few student-athletes in the history of the program to break the one minute and 50 second barrier in the 800m. His achievement came at the Patriot Open last April when he finished the race in 1:49.53. His personal-record came in the finals of the event, which proved to be pivotal for the MEAC Championships two weeks later. The Middletown, N.Y., native participated in 14 800m races last year and ran under 1:55 minutes in all but two.
His success stems from the belief that one must "have faith and never give up". With the way he has been able to overcome injury and grow as a runner, Brown epitomizes such a statement.
"I want to excel to my full potential," said Brown. "I do not want to settle for being just good enough. I want to be the best that I can be."
Brown began his collegiate career at SUNY Delhi. His tenure with the Broncos lasted two years, as he moved on from the school with aspirations to run at the Division I level. This is where UMES came calling, as he was just what Coach Ernest Barrett was looking for in regards to being a three-sport athlete.
Why UMES?
"UMES was the first Division I school to offer me a scholarship," said Brown. "I wanted to go somewhere far away from home. Coach Barrett persuaded me on coming here. It was the right fit."
The program is appreciative to have him apart of their team. His success in the 5k, 8k, 800m and 4x400m has been important for team distinction, recruitment and school notoriety. With the MEAC Championships just one week away, Brown is looking to end his cross country career at UMES on a great note.
Given his track record, one can expect a valiant effort and quality performance.
