IRONDALE, Ala. - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore softball team dropped its third consecutive game to begin the season as the Hawks fell, 13-3, to Alcorn State University in the Alcorn State Tournament on Sunday. Despite the loss, junior Jasmine James (Willingboro, N.J.) hit safely for the third consecutive contest.
UMES (0-3) opened the game by scoring a pair of runs in the top of the first. With two outs, junior Carmen Gurrola (Arleta, Calif.) walked before being moved across the diamond on an infield single by James. The pair would later come around to score on RBI singles by freshman Morgan King (Danville, Ill.) and sophomore Jade Nelson (Lithonia, Ga.). The RBI proved to be the first of King's collegiate career.
Alcorn State (3-0) would drop a four-spot in the bottom half of the inning, before posting nine runs across the next two innings. ASU was benefitted by nine hits and several UMES errors, as it raced to a lead it would never relinquish.
King capped the scoring in the game for UMES when she produced an RBI groundout that scored junior Kristen Lee (Bowie, Md.) in the fourth.
The Hawks saw four women record hits in the contest with King leading the way with a pair of RBIs. Gurrola was saddled with the loss on the mound as she gave up 13 runs (10 earned) across four innings. She fanned two in the game.
UMES looks to get in the win column when the Hawks visit Elizabeth City State University for a pair of games on Feb. 18-19.
