HAWKS DEFEATED BY NAVY IN ANNAPOLIS

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - UMES was defeated in a mid-week game by Navy 21-1 to fall to 0-4 on the season. Navy improved to 3-1 on the year.

Navy began the game with a pair of RBI hits, a Gary Dupell triple followed by a Kash Manzelli single, with two outs in the bottom of the first to go up 2-0.

UMES responded in the next half-inning. With James Newsome (Mechanicsville, Md.) on third, Franklin Armstrong (Trenton, N.J.) hit a ground ball up the middle for an infield single to bring home Newsome to cut the deficit in half 2-1.

That was a close as UMES got, as Navy scored eight runs in the bottom half of the second followed by eight runs in the fifth and three in the eighth to go up 21-1, the eventual final score.

Zachary Saca (0-2) got the loss, getting five earned runs in his start. Michael Epps (Pottstown, Pa.) did well in his first-ever appearance as a Hawk, throwing two-and-two-thirds innings with five strikeouts and just one earned run. James Smith (Florence, S.C.) pitched one-and-two-thirds, allowing two unearned runs with two strikeouts.

Navy was led by Greg Dupell, who was a home run short of the cycle, going 3-for-4 with three runs scored and four batted in. Andrew Hahn reached base six times with three hits and three walks, scoring a trio of runs. Starter Johnny Schoberl (1-0) got the win with five innings thrown, allowing one run and striking out three.

Newsome increased his hitting streak to four games with a double in the second inning.

UMES will next fly down to Alabama for the Bulldog Classic, facing Alabama A&M on Friday for a 3:00 p.m. game in Huntsville.
