PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - Juniors Lenora Guion-Firmin (La Trinite Martinique, France) and Percy Woods (Hyattsville, Md.) have been named the Peninsula Regional Medical Center University of Maryland Eastern Shore Athletes of the Week for the week of March 11.
This past weekend, Guion-Firmin became the first UMES women's indoor track athlete to be distinguished as an NCAA All-American, since the institution became a Division I member. She ran a 53.30 in the 400m dash to place eighth overall in the qualifying round of the NCAA Championships at Jacksons Indoor Track in Nampa, Idaho, on Friday.
Her time qualified her for an appearance in the finals, where she finished fourth in the first heat (53.42). Her time propelled her to a seventh-place overall finish and she received two points for the Hawks.
Woods was the top performer for the men's basketball team this past week. The junior stepped up big for the Hawks as he was 5-for-9 from the field with 17 points, three assists and two steals in UMES' MEAC Tournament First Round game against North Carolina Central. He ran the point well for UMES, where he finished with a 2-for-4 effort from long range.
The Hyattsville, Md., native scored the first two field goals for UMES in the contest against the Eagles. He opened the scoring in the game with three-pointer, before he notched a layup to give the Hawks a 6-3 lead.
The indoor track teams and men's basketball teams concluded their seasons this past week.
