April 1, 2012

Box Score

PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore softball team was swept in a double header by Coppin State University on Saturday afternoon. The women fell 5-0 in the first game, before losing 5-1 in the nightcap. With the two losses, UMES has now dropped 21 games to begin the year.

UMES (0-21, 0-5 MEAC) was the victim of a no-hitter in the first contest. The game was scoreless for the first three innings, before Coppin (11-14, 4-1 MEAC) erupted with a four-run fourth. CSU's Paige Arnold went the distance and allowed just one base runner, a walk to senior CyAnna Scott (Paterson, N.J.) in the first inning. Junior Carmen Gurrola (Arleta, Calif.) was the tough luck loser as she gave up just three earned in the complete-game effort.

The second game was not much different for the Hawks. The Hawks managed to pick up five hits in the nightcap, three of which were off of Coppin reliever, Tiffani Whaley. After falling behind 4-0 after four innings, the Hawks opened their scoring on the day with a single tally in the fifth. With two outs, freshman Morgan King (Danville, Ill.) doubled and scored after junior Jasmine James (Willingboro, N.J.) singled.

King and James paced the Hawks with two hits apiece in the game, while sophomore Cherokee Williams (Upper Marlboro, Md.) tallied one.

UMES concludes the series with Coppin State today, Sunday, April 1 at noon.
