PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - Senior Vanessa Henry (Capital Heights, Md.) and sophomore Owen Cain (Montgomery Village, Md.) have been named the Peninsula Regional Medical Center University of Maryland Eastern Shore Athletes of the Week for the week of April 30th. This is the second time in 2012 that Henry and Cain have been distinguished with the award. It is also the third time that track & field student-athletes have swept the weekly awards.
Cain placed first in the college men's triple jump at the Penn Relays on Saturday. The sophomore stood tall amongst some of the nation's finest jumpers as he bounded 15.08m (49-5.75) to take home top honors. His jump was just .83m off of the Penn Relay's all-time record, which was set in 1995. Cain's final jump was almost a half of a meter better than the third-place finisher.
Henry finished third overall in the college women's shot put championship at the Penn Relays on Thursday. She heaved the ball a distance of 15.95m (52-4). Her finish was bested by just .04m by the second-place finisher and .08m by the winner. Her event, which concluded on Thursday, saw competitors from the Big-10, SEC and Mountain West.
The outdoor track teams will return to action on May 3-5, when the Hawks travel to Greensboro, N.C, to take part in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference championships.
