NON-CONFERENCE SLATE RESUMES WITH NAVY MATCHUP

Dec. 12, 2014

Game Notes

PRINCESS ANNE, Md. -
The University of Maryland Eastern Shore men's basketball team will return to its non-conference schedule with a Saturday evening matchup with the Navy Midshipmen. UMES (4-7, 1-1) has won three of its last four games, and the Hawks will try to close its four-game homestand with another win.

UMES opened league play with a split against the pair of Tar Heel State teams. The Hawks bounced back after a loss to defending league champs, North Carolina Central. On Monday night, UMES used a second half comeback to register their first MEAC win, a 69-58 victory over North Carolina A&T.

Devin Martin (Baltimore, Md.) scored 27 points in the win, the most by a Hawk in any game this season. Mike Myers (Camden, N.J.) put up 12 points down low, though the big man struggled from the foul line, going 6-for-14. Myers has consistently created attempts from the foul line, leading the nation with 95 free throw attempts.

The Hawks now return to their non-conference schedule, having won their past two games outside the MEAC, at Fordham and home against UMBC. UMES as a program has not won three consecutive non-conference games since the 1995-96 season. With the victory over UMBC, the Hawks have already surpassed their non-conference win total from the past two seasons combined.

Since Thanksgiving, UMES has begun converting their competitive play into wins. With a win over Navy, the Hawks will have four wins in a five-game span for the first time in over a decade. The last such instance occurred when UMES won four games in five games in February of 2004.

Navy (3-7) visits Princess Anne to continue the recent tradition pitting the two local teams against one another. UMES has played the Midshipmen in seven of the last eight seasons, which includes a stretch of three straight wins for the Hawks from 2009 to 2011. Navy won the meeting between the two schools last season, up at Alumni Hall in Annapolis, Md. by a final score of 67-59.

The Midshipmen sport a very balanced attack, with only one player averaging double digits, Brandon Venturini at 10.9 points per game. 16 different players have appeared in games for Navy, more than UMES even has on their roster. 10 of those players averaged between 9.0 and 3.3 points per game, and 11 Midshipmen have started at least one game this season. UMES and Navy have one common opponent, the Red Flash of Saint Francis University. While UMES took Saint Francis down to the wire in a 57-53 contest in Loretto, Pa., Navy lost to the Red Flash in a lopsided 85-68 final in Annapolis.

Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at William P. Hytche Athletic Center in Princess Anne, Md. Hawks fans can listen live to all the action with Doug Newton and Dave Byrd on the Hawks Radio Network. Pregame coverage begins at 7:10 p.m. on SFMSports.net and Fox Sports 960 AM in Salisbury, Md.
