Dec. 18, 2014 Game Notes
PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore men's basketball team heads back out onto the road for a matchup against the Old Dominion Monarchs on Friday night. UMES (5-7) has won four of their last five games, but now faces an ODU team that has only one loss on the season.
The Hawks last played on Saturday, concluding a four-game homestand with a 53-46 victory over Navy. UMES relied on yet another second half comeback, a similar script to their previous win against North Carolina A&T. The Hawks trailed by as many as 13, erasing a big deficit with a 26-6 run over the final 12 minutes. Devin Martin (Baltimore, Md.) sparked the comeback as he hit several three-pointers down the stretch.
Martin's performance in both wins over Navy and North Carolina A&T earned him MEAC Player of the Week honors. In addition to scoring 17 points against Navy, Martin tallied a career-high 27 points versus North Carolina A&T. The junior guard has been particularly clutch during the comebacks, with 14 points after halftime against Navy and 20 second-half points against North Carolina A&T.
Coming into Friday's contest, UMES has won four of its previous five games. The program had not recorded four games in a five-game span since February of 2004. With the wins over Fordham, UMBC and Navy, the Hawks are riding a three-game winning streak outside of MEAC play. It is the first such streak during non-conference action for a UMES team since the 1995-96 season.
Mike Myers (Camden, N.J.) joins Martin as the Hawks' top performers. Navy bottled up Myers down low with stout interior defense, limiting the senior forward to just seven shots. Still, Myers finished with 15 points, continuing his offensive efficiency by shooting 6-of-7. The big man is now shooting 60.2% percent from the floor, while also earning many trips to the foul line. Myers has attempted 100 free throws on the year, second-most in the NCAA behind only Jerome Hill of Gardner-Webb (103). Over 38% percent of Myers' points have come from free throws this season.
Old Dominion (8-1) comes into the UMES matchup on a five-game winning streak, most recently squeaking out an overtime win against Georgia State on Wednesday night. The Monarchs' only loss of the season happened back on November 23 against Illinois State at the Paradise Jam in the U.S. Virgin Islands. ODU has impressive wins over Richmond, LSU, George Mason and VCU, then ranked #14 at the time. Old Dominion is a perfect 5-0 at their home court, Ted Constant Convocation Center.
The Monarchs are led by Jeff Jones, second-year head coach with a wealth of experience at both the University of Virginia and American University. On the floor, junior guard Trey Freeman paces Old Dominion with 17.1 points per game and 3.1 assists per game, both team-highs.
ODU leads the all-time series with UMES, with seven victories in seven matchups. The two schools last faced one another on December 9, 2010 as the Hawks took a blowout loss in Norfolk, 81-39. No players for the Hawks cracked double digits in scoring, and that Monarchs' squad featured current Atlanta Hawk Kent Bazemore.
Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at Ted Constant Convocation Center in Norfolk, Va. Pregame coverage will begin at 6:40 p.m. on the Hawks Radio Network, powered by SFMSports.net and Fox Sports 960 AM.
