PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - In a Saturday afternoon showdown, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Women's Basketball Team could not slow down the hot shooting American Eagles as they fell, 64-52, inside the William P. Hytche Athletic Center. The result snapped the Lady Hawks' four-game home winning streak.

With the setback, Maryland Eastern Shore dropped to 4-6 overall while the Eagles moved to .500 (5-5) on the season.

Despite the loss, UMES outrebounded American, 38-31, and scored 17 second chance points. Senior guard Shawnee Sweeney (Chester, Va.) notched a team-high 14 points and seven boards while freshman guard Moengaroa Subritzky (Auckland, New Zealand) chipped in 10 points and three rebounds in a losing effort.

After taking a halftime lead, 34-30, the Eagles opened the second period on an 11-1 run to take a double-digit lead, 45-31. Maryland Eastern Shore fought back as Sweeney nailed a long ball to trim the deficit down to single-digits, 49-40, with more than 13 minutes remaining. At the 5:21 mark, the Eagles held a 12-point lead, 55-43, but UMES would make the contest interesting. Within the next two minutes, the Lady Hawks went on a 9-0 run to cut the deficit, 55-51. Maryland Eastern Shore gave a valiant effort, but were unable to complete the comeback as they fell, 64-52.

Freshman guard Alexus Hicks (Raleigh, N.C.) started her second consecutive game and finished with season-high nine points on 3-of-4 from downtown. Junior forward Alexis Udoji (Randolph, Mass.) returned to action after missing the last contest and ended her afternoon posting nine points and nine boards in the loss.

Hicks drained a three-pointer within the first 90 seconds in the contest, but the Eagles scored the next five points to take the lead, 5-3. Sweeney's layup tied the game, 5-5, but American regained the lead after a long ball from Jordan Light, 8-5. For most of the first half, the Lady Hawks kept the contest close as there were five lead changes and five ties. With less than six minutes before intermission, the game was deadlocked, 23-23. American began to create separation as they went on an 11-4 run with under a minute to go before halftime. As time was running out, Hicks nailed another three-pointer to end the half, 34-30.

For the Eagles, they shot over 53-percent (24-of-45) from the field, including nearly 42-percent (5-of-12) from downtown. Jen Dumiak had a game-high 20 points (7-of-14), five boards and four steals. Off the bench, Ari Booth added 13 points, including a perfect 5-of-5 from the floor, in 19 minutes of action.

This Monday (12/22), Maryland Eastern Shore has a quick turnaround as they host in-state rival Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC) at the Hytche Center. Tipoff is slated for 2 p.m.
