Dec. 21, 2014 PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore men's basketball team returns to action on Monday evening against St. Bonaventure University. UMES (5-8) will face another difficult test away from Princess Anne before a short break for the holidays.
The Hawks will try to rebound from a 60-43 loss at Old Dominion in Norfolk, Va. on Friday night. The Monarchs defense bogged down the Hawks attack in the second half, as UMES went without a field goal for a ten-minute span. This allowed ODU to build a double-digit lead after the Hawks trailed by just five points at halftime. Mike Myers (Camden, N.J.) led the Hawks with 13 points; however, Devin Martin (Baltimore, Md.), the reigning MEAC Player of the Week, tallied just five points in the loss.
The loss to Old Dominion broke a three-game non-conference winning streak for the Hawks, the first such streak in 19 years for UMES. Now, UMES will face another opponent from the Atlantic 10 Conference, the third of four meetings with A-10 foes this year. Previously, the Hawks split a pair of games at VCU and Fordham, with the victory over Fordham being the first for the UMES program over an A-10 team in over 45 years.
The Hawks have been particularly stout on defense, only allowing 70 or more points three times all year. The last team to break that mark was VCU back on November 20, with nine straight opponents held to under 70 points. Myers and the Hawks will have their hands full with a St. Bonaventure squad that enters Monday's contest at 7-2. UMES will try to slow down a Bonnie offense that averages over 70 points per game.
The Bonnies are 4-1 at home with their only loss at the Reilly Center coming to Siena, back on November 19. Junior guard Marcus Posley paces St. Bonaventure with over 16 points per game. St. Bonaventure also sports a solid frontcourt duo with junior Dion Wright and senior Youssou Ndoye. Wright averages 13 points per game and 8.4 rebounds per game, while Ndoye, a seven-foot center, grabs over eleven rebounds per game and blocks nearly three shots per game.
St. Bonaventure has won both prior meetings between the two schools. UMES last visited the Bonnies on December 13, 2008, losing by a final score of 75-60. Tip-off at the Reilly Center in St. Bonaventure, N.Y. is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. Pregame coverage begins at 6:40 p.m. on the Hawks Radio Network, powered by SFMSports.net and Fox Sports 960 AM in Salisbury, Md.
