Box Score v. UNCW

CHARLESTON, S.C. - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) softball team was unable to pick-up a victory on the first day of the Charleston Southern Tournament as they fell to the Buccaneers, 5-1, to open the tournament. Later on, the Lady Hawks were held scoreless as they lost to UNC-Wilmington (UNCW), 7-0. With both losses, Maryland Eastern Shore dropped to 0-2 on the young season.

In the first contest versus Charleston Southern, UMES scored once on four hits, led by Morgan King (Danville, Ill). King registered three of the Lady Hawks' four hits in the game as she went a perfect 3-3 from the plate, including a solo homer. Abria Tinsley (Sewell, N.J.) made her Hawk debut and demonstrated a strong performance. Tinsley pitched four innings while allowing no runs, one hit, and struck out three Buccaneer batters.

Scoreless after three innings, King put the Lady Hawks on the board first as she went deep down the leftfield line to give UMES an early lead, 1-0. Charleston Southern responded, scoring five unanswered runs in the next two innings, including a two-run shot from Hayes Holdsworth. Maryland Eastern Shore dropped their season opener, 5-1.

In the second game of the day, the Lady Hawks faced UNC-Wilmington looking to rebound, but the Seahawks were the better team on this day. Again, UMES was unable to find any offensive rhythm as they were held to four hits, including two hits from King.

Maryland Eastern Shore trailed, 2-0, after four innings until the bottom of the fifth where UNCW opened the game wide-open. The Seahawks scored five runs in the innings, including a lead-off double by Lauren Moore, to put the game out-of-reach. The Lady Hawks battled but the Seahawks' Peyton Jordan was too much for UMES. Jordan went the distance, seven innings, while recording eight strikeouts in the victory.

Tomorrow (02/08/14), the Lady Hawks take on Elon University. Game-time is scheduled for 11:00 a.m. (EST) Later on; UMES faces the Buccaneers in a re-match. First-pitch is slated for approximately 1:00 p.m. (EST)
