March 16, 2014

Final Stats

DURHAM, N.C. - A day after a beautiful, sunny day in Durham, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) softball team competed in colder, chilly conditions as they lost to North Carolina Central University (NCCU), 4-3, and were swept in a three-game season-series by the Lady Eagles.

With the setback, Maryland Eastern Shore fell to 3-20 on the season while NCCU moved to 3-17 overall.

Sophomore Emily Diseroad (Manchester Valley, Md.) led the Hawk attack after going 2-of-4 with two RBIs whereas freshman Alexis Hudson (Laurel, Del.) also added two hits in the loss.

The Lady Hawks opened the contest scoring the first two runs after back-to-back runs drove in by Diseroad and Morgan King (Danville, Ill.), 2-0. After a scoreless second inning, Diseroad singled to centerfield, bringing home Hudson to increase Maryland Eastern Shore's lead, 3-0.

In the bottom three, North Carolina Central scored two runs and cut UMES' lead down to one, 3-2. In the fourth inning, the Lady Eagles took their first lead of the game after NCCU's London Germ drove in Markel Wylie, 4-3. UMES fought, but were unable to make a late rally; thus, falling to the final score, 4-3.

Other notable Hawk performances included King going 1-of-3 from the plate, including a RBI, while sophomore Abria Tinsley (Sewell, N.J.) pitched well in relief for freshman Kelly Cullen (Fruitland, Md.) as she threw 2.1 innings, allowing one hit and struck out a batter in a losing effort.

For the Lady Eagles, the Germ sisters, Emerie & London, combined for 4-of-6 while producing three RBIs. NCCU's Dominque Wilkins pitched a complete game (7.0 innings) while allowing three runs on eight hits and struck out six Lady Hawks in the victory.

Maryland Eastern Shore continues their road trip in Savannah, Ga. where they will face Savannah State University (SSU) at Lady Tiger Softball Field on Tuesday, March 18th in a doubleheader. First-pitches are set for 1:00 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. (EST), respectively.
