PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) softball team were unable to slow down the hot bats of Delaware State University (DSU) as they fell to the Lady Hornets in both contests, 11-3 and 8-2, respectively.

With both losses, the Lady Hawks dropped to 7-39 overall (4-11 MEAC) while Delaware State moved to 31-15 (14-3 MEAC) on the season.

In Game One, UMES manufactured three runs on eight hits, led by sophomore Trenece Nash (Decatur, Ga.). The Georgia-native went 2-of-3 while fellow sophomore Emily Diseroad (Manchester Valley, Md.) and junior Morgan King (Danville, Ill.) each recorded a RBI in a losing effort.

Trailing, 1-0, after the first inning, Maryland Eastern Shore found themselves in a deeper hole as the Lady Hornets tallied three additional runs in the third to take a commanding lead, 4-0. In the bottom third, UMES capitalized on a DSU error to trim the deficit, 4-1. After a scoreless fourth inning, Delaware State padded their lead with three more runs in the fifth, 7-1, but the Lady Hawks refused to give up.

In the bottom half of the fifth, King delivered a two-out RBI-double to center field, bringing home sophomore Vanessa Gomez (Belleville, N.J.), 7-2. Next at-bat, Diseroad singled up-the-middle, driving home King, and cut the deficit, 7-3.

In the top of the seventh, the Lady Hornets put the game out-of-reach as they scored four times to win by the final score, 11-3.

For DSU, they registered 11 runs on 18 hits, led by freshman Tara Tursellino. The California-native collected four hits along with two RBIs in the Game One victory.

In Game Two, King went 3-of-4 from the plate, including a double, whereas senior Cherokee Williams (Upper Marlboro, Md.) tallied two hits in the loss.

Delaware State took an early lead, 1-0, until a solo homer from Gomez tied the game after one, 1-1. In the next four innings, both teams were held scoreless as DSU' senior Rachel Meagley and UMES' sophomore Abria Tinsley (Sewell, N.J.) battled their way out of jams.

In the sixth inning, the Lady Hornets had an offensive explosion as they rallied seven runs to take a commanding lead, 8-1. Despite the looming outcome, the Lady Hawks battled to the end, posting a run in their final at-bat to make the final score, 8-2.

For Delaware State, sophomore Sandy Hawthrone and freshman Danielle Velez guided the Lady Hornets in Game Two as they both recorded three hits each in the victory.

Tomorrow (05/04), Maryland Eastern Shore will host their final home game of the season against DSU. First-pitch is set for noon (EST). Additionally, the Lady Hawks will recognize seniors Williams, Chelsea Alston (Matawan, N.J.), and Carmen Frazier (Montgomery Village, Md.) as they are competing in their final home game as members of the UMES softball team.
